The annual nationwide survey by business group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) of beaches and harbours has shown both Keem and Old Head beaches in county Mayo  to be ‘Clean to European Norms’.

Nationally, litter levels are on the rise, with only 8 of 33 areas surveyed receiving the ‘Clean’ designation. Alongside its impact on tourism and recreation, IBAL is warning that coastal litter has grave implications for the future of our planet.

The An Taisce report for Keem stated: “An exceptionally clean and well presented  beach environment with all aspects of the area in very good condition e.g. signage, seating, litter bins, recycle facilities etc.   The aluminium can / mixed glass bin was very fresh in appearance and as well as the permanent litter bins, there was a temporary one beside a food truck.”

The An Taisce report for Old Head stated:“Old Head has scored very well.  The car park was freshly presented and generally very good with regard to litter - this high standard  was extended throughout the beach area and immediate hinterland. Despite the beach being exposed to the Atlantic and prone to marine litter, there was none visible.  Old Head Blueway Signage, Sun Smart and 'Wild Atlantic Trail - Louisburgh' signage was in good order; a novel anti-litter sign was in the shape of a foot - 'Leave Nothing but Footprints in the Sand'.”

Salthill beach was also among the 8 beaches across the country that was deemed Clean to European Norms.

Beaches, harbours, rivers and their immediate environs were monitored by An Taisce in June and July.

Nationally a number of popular beaches slipped to ‘moderately littered’ status, among them Strandhill in county Sligo.
