Gardaí will not launch an investigation into an alleged assault on a referee in a GAA match until a formal complaint about the incident is made.

The alleged attack on referee Kevin Naughton took place during an underage football match in Roscommon on Wednesday evening.

According to the Irish Independent, it is understood that while gardaí have carried out initial inquiries, they had – as of last night – not received a formal complaint from the referee involved.

If this is done, they will attempt to establish exactly how the referee suffered injuries which required him to be hospitalised, including speaking to witnesses present.

The Roscommon County Board has now officially postponed its entire programme of weekend fixtures after the county’s referees withdrew their services for three days.
