It’s emerged that some unqualified teachers have been hired to mark this year’s state exams.

The State Examinations Commission confirmed to the Irish Times that some of those correcting the Leaving and Junior cert's this year were drawn from a pool of students completing a professional masters of education or other 'qualified applicants' who are not teachers.

However the SEC says they represent a 'small proportion' of the 4,000 plus examiners, the majority of which are serving or retired teachers.
