The government need to take action in dealing with the shortage of community welfare staff across the region.
That's according to Galway East TD Sean Canney.
The Independent Deputy says the government advised people who were struggling with the cost of living to contact their community welfare officer for support.
These officers are now inundated with calls and a lack of staff means applications for assistance are taking much longer than usual.
