There is a sense of anger and shock in historic community of Straide over loss of their resident parish priest.
A meeting was held in St. Peter and Paul’s Church last night to discuss the surprise move by Bishop of Achonry, Paul Dempsey, which will see the change come into effect from September.
The church claims the move is being taken due to the impact of decreasing vocations across the region.
A notice circulated in the village said the historical parish is 'angry' at the prospect of losing their resident PP, the position currently being filled by Fr. Martin Convey.
He is being appointed PP of Collooney, from September and Fr. Stephen O’Mahony, PP in Bohola, is expected to take on the extra responsibility of serving parishioners locally.
Tom Fahy, a member of the local parish council, told Midwest News that the local community have no idea as to why their parish is being singled out to lose their parish priest.
