Over €3.1 million has been invested into 46 library branches across the country, including two libraries in the region.
Minister Heather Humphreys made the announcement today at the World Library Congress in Dublin.
Both Tubbercurry and Ballinasloe have been made 'My Open Library' locations, which has been set up to give members access to library facilities outside of normal opening hours.
The initiative will allow people to avail of self-service library services between 8am to 10pm, 7 days a week.
Meanwhile €2.2 million in funding will be provided to roll out the initiative in a further 17 branches, including the library in Clifden.
