Higher rates of dole payments for those who suddenly lose their jobs could be on the way in the budget.

The Irish Independent is reporting the measure is under consideration to help avoid an 'income shock' for those who unexpectedly become unemployed.

If adopted the scheme would be modelled on the PUP which at one stage had three different levels of payment depending on the recipient’s original wage.

The paper says its part of a wider plan to get those who retire early or who've been carers in the home to take up part-time employment.
