The Government bill that will provide grants of up to €420,000 for homeowners to repair defects caused by mica and pyrite, has been signed into law by President Michael D. Higgins.

The defective blocks redress scheme originally covered affected houses in the west and northwest of the country, but has been extended to cover Limerick and Clare.

It is estimated the scheme will cost €2.7bn.

Mica and pyrite defects are thought to affect more than 7,000 homes, many in Donegal and Mayo.
