The government needs to urgently take action, if it is to prepare for today's climate and that of the future.

The Climate Change Advisory Council has warned the country's buildings, supply routes, public services, health system and work practices all need to adapt to extreme weather conditions.

The warning comes as the agriculture and environment ministers meet today, to decide on emission targets for the farming sector.

Independent TD for Roscommon-Galway, Michael Fitzmaurice, is urging Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue not to agree to a 30 per cent cut in emissions.

He has been speaking to Midwest News this lunchtime.
