Mayo County Council needs to take out a commercial loan if it's the only way that affordable housing schemes can be built in the county.
That's the view of Westport based Fianna Fail Councillor Brendan Mulroy, and he says his colleagues on the local authority concur with that view.
There were more than 700 expressions of interest in affordable homes from couples and individuals across the county recently, when Mayo County Council sought expressions of interest from the public.
Affordable housing is for the many people who find they do not qualify for social housing, yet have no chance of securing a mortgage from a bank to buy a house on the open market.
To date, Mayo has failed to secure any Government funding for an affordable housing scheme.
Councillor Mulroy told Midwest News that with the crisis in housing for so many at present in the county, action is now needed by Mayo County Council to deliver on affordable housing.
