Elected members of Mayo County Council yesterday voted down a proposal to live stream statutory meetings of the authority.

Instead, a majority of councillors agreed to a proposal by Ballinrobe Fianna Fail Councillor Damian Ryan for the council to supply a video link to meetings, via Microsoft Teams, to members of the public who make an application for it.

At yesterday’s monthly meeting of the authority Castlebar Fine Gael Councillor Donna Sheridan proposed the motion that was supported by her Fine Gael colleagues, together with Independents Mark Duffy, Johno O’Malley and Sinn Fein’s Gerry Murray.

She says the decision of Fianna Fail councillors and others not to support it is “a big disappointment as we are not a secret society".
