The 66th annual O’Malley Clan Gathering is underway.

It’s a busy weekend, centred in Newport, with a wide variety of events around county Mayo over three days.

The Chieftain of the O’Malley Clan Association this year is Professor Tom O’Malley, Consultant Geriatrician at Mayo University Hospital.

The Gathering got underway this afternoon at the Town Hall Theatre in Westport with a series of talks, that include discussions on the historic Pirate Queen Grace O’Malley.

This evening at the same location, author and peace enthusiast, Professor Padraig O’Malley director of the award winning documentary The Peacemaker, will be in conversation with former Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

Tomorrow members of the Clan travel by bus to Ballintubber Abbey and on to The National Museum of Country Life in Turlough, Castlebar.

The Chieftain’s reception takes place at Hotel Newport tomorrow afternoon (Sat) followed by dinner and entertainment.

The AGM of the Association takes place on Sunday at Hotel Newport.

The international event attracts O’Malleys worldwide.
