Preliminary Census results released today show the highest population in the country since 1851 which over 5.1 million people now living in Ireland.
Every county has seen a growth in population, with Leitrim seeing the highest population growth in the Provence with a 9.5% increase. Mayo saw a 5.2% increase in population going from 130,507 in the last census to 137,231 this time around.
Roscommon had an 8.4% increase while Galway and Sligo saw increases of 7.1% and 6.5% respectively.
Leitrim also saw the highest percentage of vacant homes with 16% of homes being marked as empty.
