Third-level students should be given free train travel similar to pensioners. That’s the view of Achill based Fianna Fail councillor Paul McNamara.
The councillor made the proposal at the recent monthly meeting of the West Mayo Municipal Meeting, where Irish Rail made a presentation to councillors.
He said while he appreciates the 50 percent reduction in fares for students and anyone aged between 19and 23 that was recently introduced across public transport, he believes Irish Rail should go further and abolish fares for third level students already faced with huge accommodation costs travelling and living in cities to attend colleges.
