A national initiative aimed at providing the best possible care for young adults and adolescents with cancer, plans to locate a specialist unit at University Hospital Galway

A new HSE Framework will see a state of the art cancer care network delivered locally where possible, and centralised when necessary.

It would involve three new specialist units to include the Galway hospital.

Around 200 children up to the age of 16 are diagnosed every year with cancer, and a further almost 200 adolescents between 16 and 25 years are diagnosed every year.
