The HSE is to submit an application in the coming weeks for planning permission for the new 50-bed unit at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Roscommon.

The long-promised new unit is required to bring the long-stay residential home up to HIQA standards.

Work was expected to start on the new building last year, but has not yet progressed.

Following queries from Roscommon Independent TD Denis Naughten, the HSE has now confirmed that a planning application will be submitted to Roscommon County Council in early May.

Deputy Naughten told Midwest News that the planning and tendering process must be completed without delay, to allow construction work get underway as soon as possible....
