There is huge disappointment that Mayo has lost two more Blue Flags for its beaches this year and every effort is now needed to find out why and how they can be restored, according to local councillor Peter Flynn.

Blue Flags are an international recognition awarded when a beach meets a specific set of criteria relating to water quality, information provision, environmental education, safety and environmental management.

At present Mayo has 9 Blue Flags, a drop of two since last year.

Both Carrowmore Beach in Louisburgh and the beach on Clare Island lost their Blue Flag Status for 2022, and according to councillor Flynn these are significant losses  and he insists that the cause of both beaches losing their Blue Flags must be investigated and resolved.
