Its emerged that wealthier households will not be able to give back the 100 euro energy credit, even if they want to.

The credit is due to be applied to all domestic electricity bills in March, but there has been criticism that the universal grant is unfair because it's the same for those on high, low or no incomes.

The Irish Independent reports today that Public Expenditure Minister Michael McGrath had sought an opt-out for higher earners who didn't need or want the credit, but the proposal was turned down by the energy regulator as it would delay the project.
