A new data centre is to be located at the former Asahi site in Killala, and looks set to be up and running by late 2024.

At yesterday’s online monthly meeting of Mayo County Council, councillors approved the sale of two plots of council land for the development of the Mayo Green Data Hub at the Killala Business Park.

The proposal, from US based company AVAIO Digital Partners, was subject to the sale of land by the local authority.

The company’s proposal includes the construction of a 20Mw Data centre facility at the site. The total investment from the company will be €150 million for the initial phase, and up to €400 million for the full completion of the project.

It’s expected that up to a thousand jobs could be created at the site during the construction phase, with an estimated 50 people employed at the Data Centre when completed.

Local councillor Jarlath Munnelly says it’s a very exciting project not just for Killala, but for Mayo and the west, as it will be the first Data Centre located in the region.
