228 people have died from Covid-19 in Co Mayo since the start of the pandemic.

A new report from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre shows the number of deaths in each county, since March 2020.

The figure for Mayo is 228, which represents 174 deaths per 100,000 people and is the second highest rate in the country, after Co Louth.

Elsewhere across the region, 168 people have died from the virus in Galway, 75 in Roscommon and 44 in Sligo since the 1st March 2020 - the start of the pandemic.

Nationally, the total number of people who died with Covid in that timeframe is 5,952.

The median age of those who died was 82.

86% of those who died were in hospital or residential institutions.
