Mayo native Dr Mike Ryan of the World Health Organisation has been presented with a Presidential Distinguished Service Award - in recognition of his service to global public health over a number of decades.

Dr Ryan - who grew up in Charlestown - visited Áras an Uachtaráin yesterday where he received the award, and briefed President Michael D Higgins on the currently global situation in relation to Covid-19 vaccines, and on the challenges posed by the Omicron variant.

Dr Ryan was due to receive the presidential award, which recognises the contribution of members of the Irish diaspora, at a ceremony last month, but was unable to attend due to his ongoing work with the WHO.
