A 43-year-old man appeared in court this morning charged in connection with a series of knifepoint robberies in Castlebar over the Christmas and New Year period.

Ian Burke of 12 Lios Na Circe, Castlebar, did not apply for bail when he appeared before Judge Deirdre Gearty at a sitting of the local district court.

He was remanded in custody to appear via video link before Ballina District Court on Tuesday next, January 11.

The offences Mr Burke has been charged with include robberies and attempted robberies at a number of locations in Castlebar including a bakery shop, a ladies’ fashion shop, a jewellers and a hairdressers.

Gardai gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution, and said the accused made no reply  when the charges were put to him.

Inspector Denis Harrington told the court that DPP directions in the matter are still awaited.

An application for free legal aid for the accused was granted, after the judge heard he's on a disability allowance of €200 per week.
