Cases of Covid-19 are increasing rapidly across the West, similar to all areas of the country according to the HSE, with the new Omicron variant being blamed for the significant surge in cases.

People are being urged to take every precaution over Christmas, to try and reduce the spread of the virus - which involves adhering to the ongoing public health advice on hand hygiene, mask-wearing and good ventilation, as well as avoiding crowded areas.

Dr Breda Smyth is the HSE's Director of Public Health in the West.
