The cause of death is a determination made by a coroner, according to the CEO of the Saolta Hospital group, Tony Canavan.
Through a Freedom of Information request from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre, details of the number of patients nationally who died in hospitals, having acquired Covid 19 while in hospital has been published and Mayo University Hospital had the seventh highest figure nationally of patients who acquired the virus while in hospital and died.
The number in respect of Mayo University Hospital was 45 patients, Sligo University Hospital was 35 patients and Galway University Hospital was nine patients.
Tony Canavan told Midwest News today that in the majority of these 45 reported cases at Mayo University Hospital the determination in relation to the cause of death has not yet been made.
Mr Canavan insists all hospitals across the Saolta Group strictly adhere to public health guidance, infection and prevention control and expressed their deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of all patients with COVID-19 who have died in their care.
