€2.6 million in funding has been provided to one town in each county nationally to deliver the first ever Town Centre First Plans.
Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys made the announcement for the plan which aims to play a key role in tackling dereliction and revitalising towns.
As part of the initiative, each local authority will be provided with €100,000 to support the development of its own unique master plan.
Among the 26 towns selected include Killala in Mayo, Tubbercurry in Sligo, Strokestown in Roscommon, Gort in Galway and Carrick On Shannon in Leitrim.
Towns for this first phase were selected based on submissions received from the Local Authorities.
The funding will support each local authority, working with a collaborative Town Team, to develop a be-spoke TCF plan to guide the development of each town.
Fine Gael Councillor Jarlath Munnelly told Midwest News that this funding will revitalise Killala town centre.
Deputy Frank Feighan says that Tubbercurry and other towns can draw down funding once their master plans are complete.
