A Status Red Wind Warning is now in place for Cork and Kerry as Storm Barra hits the country.
A red alert for Co Clare will also come into effect from four o'clock this afternoon.
Gusts in excess of 130 kilometres per hour are expected, and homes are businesses are advised to expect disruption to power and travel.
In red areas, people are being urged to cancel all plans and stay at home.
Meanwhile orange warnings are in place for most other coastal counties - including Mayo and Galway, with yellow alerts for the rest of the country.
The Department of Education has advised schools remain closed in 12 counties, including Mayo and Galway.
The Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology has also announced that all campuses across both counties will be closed today due to the storm, while all planned online activities and remote working will continue as scheduled.
