No additional beds will be provided at University Hospital Galway under the government’s Winter Health Plan. This is despite 205 additional hospital beds being provided nationwide.
During a recent meeting between HSE officials and the Oireachtas Health Committee, Galway Senator, Sean Kyne, described the situation as “unbelievable” considering the huge pressure the Emergency Department at Galway University Hospital is experiencing at present.
One in eight patients on trolleys nationally waiting for admission to a hospital bed, over the last eight weeks, were in Galway, the Fine Gael Senator claims.
He told Midwest News Editor Teresa O’Malley the response that no additional acute beds can be accommodated at Galway University hospital in the immediate or medium term is simply unacceptable.
