A Government TD says a culture of underreporting of abuse against referees is prevalent across Irish rugby, soccer and GAA.
Alan Dillon, Deputy Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media, invited sporting organisations before the committee yesterday to discuss the issue of abuse against sporting officials.
The former Mayo senior footballer says while the issue of abuse of referees is not new, it is getting worse with an increasing culture of underreporting across clubs and organisations.
Deputy Dillon has been telling Midwest News that harassment of referees needs to be stamped out once and for all.
He also believes that adequate systems are not in place within counties to address the issue of referee abuse.
