The hospitality industry is taking the brunt of the latest Covid 19 restrictions, with many restaurants and hotels experiencing record cancellations over the past week.
Mayo Fianna Fail Deputy Dara Calleary raised the plight of the industry in the Dail.
He is insisting that PUP and wage subsidies must be retained in hospitality to keep key skills in place, when the pandemic passes.
In an address to Minister of State at the Dept of Finance Sean Fleming, deputy Calleary called on the government to provide extra support packages because the industry is struggling due to new Covid restrictions.
He cited the example of a small restaurant that had 2,324 cancellations in the past two weeks.
He is calling on government to ensure that the many workers directly impacted by the present restrictions in nightclubs, pubs, restaurants and hotels are adequately compensated to remain in the sector.
Deputy Calleary has been speaking to Midwest News Editor Teresa O’Malley..
