A Ballina dental practice has won a national award, for their work in preventing serious dental injuries on the sports field.
Dr Paul Dunne and his team at the Ballina Dental Practice won the Colgate Caring Dental Team of the Year award for providing properly-fitted dental mouthguards for all 80 players in Knockmore GAA club, at no cost to the club or players.
The dental practice, based at Kevin Barry Street in Ballina, was nominated by Knockmore GAA club.
After treating two serious dental injuries which resulted in tooth loss for patients wearing no mouth-guard or an across-the-counter mouthguard, Dr Dunne contacted the GAA club and learned that only a few players had properly fitted dental mouth-guards.
He and his team offered to provide individually-fitted mouthguards to all the adult members of the club in both male and female codes, at no cost to either club or players.
It was described by the club as " a wonderful act of kindness by all concerned".
The 2021 Colgate Caring Dentist of the Year awards were presented in Dublin on Saturday night, after almost 1,000 nominations were received from all over the country.
