Three permanent deacons were ordained yesterday for the Archdiocese of Tuam.

In his final official engagement as Archbishop of Tuam, Dr Michael Neary ordained three lay men to the Permanent Diaconate at the refurbished Tuam Cathedral.

Cathal Galligan from the parish of Corofin, Julian Drapiewski from Athenry parish and James McLoughlin from the parish of Carnacon were the first people ordained as permanent deacons in the Archdiocese of Tuam.

All three are married men with fulltime jobs, and will assist with a number of ministries - they can confer at baptisms, bless marriages, preside at funerals, bring communion to the sick and assist at the altar during Mass.

Ballyhaunis parish priest Fr Stephen Farragher and Fr Fergal Cunnane from Dunmore led the formation programme for the new permanent deacons,along with Maureen Behan .

Speaking to Midwest News this lunchtime, Fr Stephen Farragher said it was decided over 4 years ago to introduce permanent deacons in the Archdiocese of Tuam....
