Planning permission has been granted for an expansion of Ballina based Charles River Laboratories plant, to facilitate the intensification of its operations and the creation of an additional 90 jobs over the next three years.

On July 23 last, the company announced an €8m investment in its plant at Carrentrilla, Ballina. It subsequently made a planning application to Mayo County Council on August 13 for an additional 1,500 metre square lab space on the existing site.

The extension, together with the additional recruitment, will facilitate ongoing batch release testing for Covid-19 vaccines by Charles River Laboratories in partnership with AstraZeneca.

Last week, the applicant was notified of the granting of planning permission for the extension.

The permission is subject to a total of 18 conditions.

Mayo County Council has also requested the applicant to pay development contributions totaling almost 31,000 euro and a contribution – to be agreed with Mayo Co Council prior to construction – in respect of the extension of pedestrian and or cycling connectivity with the town of Ballina.
