Pope Francis is to appoint a single Bishop to the Diocese of Galway, Kilmacduagh and Kilfenora and the Diocese of Clonfert.

The union of two dioceses under one Bishop is not, however, according to the Bishops, an amalgamation and does not suppress either of the two dioceses.

Both dioceses will continue to maintain their own autonomy.

Both dioceses will be organising meetings shortly to inform the local communities.

Brendan Kelly is the present Bishop of Galway, Kilmacduagh and Kilfenora while Michael Duignan is Bishop of Clonfert.
