Local TD Denis Naughten has asked the Minister for Justice to intervene as Garda manpower has hit an all-time low in the Roscommon Garda District leaving just one Garda policing an area from Ballyleague to Ballinasloe on occasion.
Speaking in the Dail, the deputy said that in the past three years, 25 Gardaí have left the Roscommon district through promotion, transfer and retirement and none of them have been replaced.
He says there are supposed to be seven or eight Gardaí on average in each unit and that has been the case in Roscommon in recent years, but at the moment that’s down to three or four Gardaí,
Denis Naughten says the situation is not unique to Roscommon, rural areas generally are experiencing similar situations across the west. Roscommon, Mayo, and Longford make up a new large Garda Division that runs from Blacksod in Mayo to Granard in county Longford.
