Tom McCann is a dementia nurse specialist with Western Alzheimer’s and he’s been talking to Tommy Marren about the importance of people becoming more comfortable about talking about dementia. Every person has a role to play when it comes to dementia.

The person living with dementia can live a normal life but supports from family, friends, neighbours and communities can make a huge difference.

500,000 people have been affected by dementia, and people are becoming more understanding and empathetic of people with dementia.

Here are a few things that can help;

  • See the person, not the dementia,
  • Talk about dementia,
  • Ask how you can help,
  • Stay in touch,
  • Support the person to keep up hobbies and interests,
  • Make sure your service or space is easy to use.
