Pope Francis has announced the appointment of Bishop Francis Duffy as the  Archbishop of Tuam.

Archbishop-elect Duffy will replace Archbishop Michael Neary who is retiring at the age of 75.

Born in County Cavan, 63-year-old Bishop Duffy was ordained to the priesthood in 1982.

He became the Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise in 2013.

Archbishop-elect Duffy  concelebrated  Mass at 10am this morning in the Cathedral of the Assumption , Tuam, with His Excellency Archbishop Jude Thaddeus Okolo, Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland; and Archbishop Michael Neary, Archbishop of Tuam.  Following today's announcement, he takes up the role as Archbishop-elect of the Tuam Diocese from Emeritus Archbishop Neary, who has held the position since 1995.
