The magnificent sight of the Argentine ARA Libertad ship sailing into Killala bay at Kilcummin could be on the horizon again this Summer.
The navy training ship of the Argentine Navy last sailed into Kilcummin back in 1998, and at this week’s monthly meeting of Mayo County Council, councillors agreed to extend an invitation to the Argentine Navy to come in again off the north Mayo coast in July of 2022.
Foxford based councillor Neil Cruise proposed extending the invitation, and it was enthusiastically supported by all councillors present.
The founder of the Argentine Navy was Admiral William Brown who was born in Foxford county Mayo. The late Admiral continues to be held in high regard in Argentina and for many years strong links between Foxford and the south American country have been developed as a result.
