It's time to prioritise the safety peoples' homes, so the silt beds in the river at the Mall in Westport should be removed.
That's according to Westport Independent Councillor Christy Hyland.
An Inland Fisheries Ireland expert told a meeting of the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District this week that the silt islands could cause flooding in the town, if they're not removed.
The silt beds were originally introduced as a resting place for ducks, but have become covered in vegetation, and Padraic O'Malley of Inland Fisheries told the meeting that they could cause a build-up of water, putting the town centre at risk of flooding.
He advised that, if they were to be removed, it should occur after 1st June next year, to allow spawning to take place.
Councillor Christy Hyland says houses have to be protected, so the silt beds should be removed....
