The world's largest aircraft touched down in Shannon Airport this afternoon.
The Antonov AN-225 arriving from China, carrying a consignment of cargo for distribution to the Irish retail sector.
Shannon Airport is the only airport in Ireland capable of accommodating the plane, which has a wingspan wider than the pitch at Croke Park, and from nose to tail, is over one and a half times the length of an Olympic swimming pool.
The Ukranian-built aircraft is the only one of its kind, with a wingspan of 88 metres, it has 6 engines and 32 tyres and can carry 640,000 tonnes on take-off.
The last time this plane touched down in Shannon was in June last year, at the height of the Covid pandemic, when it carried the single largest consignment of PPE - Personal Protective Equipment - to be flown into Ireland on a single flight.
