A Mayo Deputy has voiced his frustration with the passport service citing a severe backlog in the system and a lack of response to queries.

There are 1,232 passport applications from Mayo currently in the system and Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary says this needs to be addressed urgently.

Deputy Calleary says there is a need for extra staff and has also proposed a full time passport office to be opened in the West of Ireland.

He says Ireland West Airport would be an ideal location and has been giving more details to Midwest Radio's Michael D McAndrew.
