There is an increasing view among businesses in Castlebar that the new N5 Turlough to Westport dual carriageway is an undesirable and unnecessary development for the county town. That’s according to Mayo fianna Fail councillor Al McDonnell.
He re-iterated his opinion on the impact of the new road on business in Castlebar at the monthly meeting of Castlebar Municipal District.
The 240 million euro new road, he argues, is great for Westport and he congratulated Westport for its success in securing it, but he said it is in reality a by-pass of Castlebar and will only reduce travel time between Castlebar and Westport when completed, by approx 3 mins.
He says Castlebar town centre will be 2 and a half km at least from any access off the new road and will not entice business into the county town.
Cllr McDonnell first outlined his concerns about the development some years ago, and he claims there is growing consensus in Castlebar that this massive road spend will be to the detriment of business in the town.
