Mayo, Roscommon, Galway and Leitrim are among 11 counties that do not currently have a day care service for people with dementia.

This is affecting hundreds of people with dementia across the West and their families, according to the Alzheimers Society of Ireland, which says centres in 9 counties are no longer suitable due to adaptations required under Covid-19 restrictions, while two counties have no day care service.

The society is calling for capital funding of €15 million in the upcoming Budget for counties that are experiencing difficulty in providing dementia day services.

There are currently 64,000 people with dementia in Ireland, with 11,000 new cases diagnosed every year.
