Some older people are scared to answer their phone, due to the high volume of scams going on at present.
That's according to Westport Councillor Christy Hyland, who raised the matter at a recent meeting of the Mayo Joint Policing Committee.
Councillor Hyland said there's a huge fear factor among older people due to the prevalence of scam callers, and he urged Gardai to provide more information to the public on how to deal with scam calls and emails.
In response, Supt Joe McKenna urged elderly people to have caller ID on their phones, and advised anyone who answers a call to a suspected fraudster to just hang up.
The Superintendent also outlined a pilot anti-fraud initiative, where Gardai from two divisions - Mayo and Limerick city - are working with the Banking Payments Federation of Ireland to identify vulnerable individuals who have been put under pressure or have been tricked into withdrawing or transferring funds to fraudsters.
Speaking with Midwest News this evening, Councillor Christy Hyland says some people are afraid to ignore phone calls as they may be genuine, but more information is needed on a regular basis as to how to deal with scammers....
