A Westport councillor has described some of the personal attacks aimed at members of the Mayo senior football squad and management as ‘staggering and shocking’.
Personal attacks aimed at players on social media in the aftermath of the All-Ireland final have been condemned by Councillor Brendan Mulroy.
The Cathaoirleach of the West Mayo Municipal District is raising the issue at a meeting of Mayo County Council today.
He is asking people to reflect on posts they may have put up over the weekend and take any abusive ones down out of respect to players and their families.
While Cllr. Mulroy welcomes constructive criticism of the team’s performance, he stressed that reference to a footballer’s style, personality or family is ‘out of order.’
Cllr Brendan Mulroy told Midwest News that those posting on social media should be conscious of people’s mental health before singling out individuals.
