Formal approval has been granted for an €18.4 million extension to the Emergency Department at Mayo University Hospital.

The extension was first announced several years ago, to provide additional beds in the Emergency Department - particularly as attendances at the facility increased significantly following the closure of the Accident & Emergency unit at Roscommon Hospital.

Mayo FG Deputy Alan Dillon says formal approval for the extension was given by HSE Estates at a meeting yesterday evening, with work expected to start next year.

Deputy Dillon says it's good news for the hospital, as the investment of over €18 million wil greatly increase capacity in the Emergency Department...
