Mayo County Councillors are to write to the Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien, calling for the income thresholds for council or social housing to be revised.

At present, a couple with two children earning over €27,500 do not qualify for local authority housing.

Killala-based Councillor Jarlath Munnelly believes families on the average industrial wage should qualify for social housing.

Councillor Munnelly had a notice of motion before yesterday's monthly meeting of Mayo County Council, calling on the Department of Housing to carry out a review of the social housing income limits, which received the support of his colleagues.
