53 people died in workplace-related accidents last year, according to the Health & Safety Authority - an increase on the 47 fatalities the previous year - despite significant changes in workplaces due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
28 of those who lost their lives were self-employed, 12 were employees and 13 were non-workers.
Agriculture, forestry and fishing accounted for 43% of the fatalities, and the highest number of deaths in these sectors was among people aged 65 or over.
28% of workplace fatalities were in the construction sector.
There was a 20% decline in the number of non-fatal workplace accidents in 2020.
