The devastation and stress for homeowners caused by pyrite damage is not being under-estimated or ignored by Government.
That's according to the Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien who gave an update to the Cabinet yesterday in relation to the Defective Concrete Block grant scheme for Mayo and Donegal.
Minister O'Brien pointed out that the scheme, being administered by Mayo and Donegal County Councils, opened for applications at the end of last June and 433 applications have since been received across the two counties, with five remedial options available to homeowners ranging from external wall replacement to full demolition and rebuild.
Affected homeowners are angry that the grant scheme only provides a maximum of 90% compensation, while an earlier scheme in Dublin covered 100% of remediation costs.
However, the Minister said any changes to the current scheme would require approval by several Government departments.
Meanwhile, homeowners who've encountered problems with mica or pyrite damage are planning to stage a protest outside the Dáil next week.
