A Garda Armed Support Unit should be permanently based in Sligo - that's the view of Fine Gael Councillor Thomas Walsh, who will raise the matter at today's monthly meeting of Sligo County Council.
Councillor Walsh says a serious incident occurred in Sligo two weeks ago, involving two serious assaults and an arson attack on a vehicle and a house.
He claims it took over half an hour for the Armed Support Unit based in Ballyshannon to arrive in Sligo, while another unit was also dispatched from Galway to assist.
At the start of the Covid-19 pandemic last year, the armed support unit was split , with half the unit based in Sligo and the other half in Ballyshannon, which Councillor Walsh says worked very well, but the unit has since been brought back to Co Donegal.
Councillor Walsh says it's vital that Gardai have rapid access to armed assistance in emergency situations, and he's calling for a permanent armed support unit to be based in Sligo for the Sligo /Leitrim region....
