IT Sligo, GMIT and LKIT have today submitted their long-awaited joint application for Technological University status.

The Department of Further and Higher Education is expecting a formal application letter that will allow the appointment of an international expert panel to examine the case for the proposed University

The proposed University will then be considered by the Higher Education Authority, before being decided upon by Minister Simon Harris early next year.

TUI members of Galway-Mayo IT, IT Sligo and Donegal Colleges branches accepted a Memorandum of Understanding to transition to the Connacht Ulster Alliance (CUA) Technological University yesterday.

The three branches supported the move by 74%, 86% and 89% respectively.

The Minister for State at the Department of Health Frank Feighan says the ‘Connacht Ulster Alliance’ application is the result of years of hard work led by IT Sligo, its staff and President.

Deputy Frank Feighan told Midwest News that if approved, the Technological University will drive enhanced regional development across the Northwest.
